University of Bern

Co-head of the Sustainable Land Systems impact area (CDE) & Senior Researcher (GIUB)

Research rooted in territories, in service of those who inhabit them.

Field research

I have worked at the University of Bern since 2012 - full-time from 2012 to 2022, and part-time since then, alongside my field activities in Senegal. Senior Researcher at GIUB and co-head of the Sustainable Land Systems impact area at CDE, I pursue research that serves a purpose: rooted in territories, in service of those who inhabit them.

GIUB

Institute of Geography

One of the largest geography institutes in Switzerland, part of the Faculty of Science. Research on society-environment interactions, territorial dynamics and landscape transformations.

CDE

Centre for Development and Environment

Interdisciplinary research and teaching centre dedicated to sustainable development. Transdisciplinary approach, partnerships with the Global South, science-policy-society interface.

The research

Research focus

My research sits at the intersection of sustainability, justice and the politics of knowledge. More than any single method, it is driven by a set of questions: whose knowledge counts, who decides how land and resources are used, and what a fair transition actually demands.

For some fifteen years I have worked on territories under tension - from Laos and Myanmar to the Caribbean, the Sahel and the drylands of Northern Kenya. Across these contexts I draw on transdisciplinary and participatory approaches - living labs, arts-based methods, participatory mapping and spatial data - but always in service of a deeper concern: surfacing the knowledge, voices and claims that dominant systems tend to overlook.

My main anchor today is in Senegal (Petite Côte and Casamance), around food systems and the agroecological transition. What interests me is less the data than the epistemologies at play - how farmers' knowledge, science and innovation meet or collide - and what environmental justice and sustainability mean in practice. This also frames my co-leadership of the Sustainable Land Systems impact area at CDE, which connects land use, justice and sustainability across the Global South.
